Reader Question: What To Buy for Fall?

A while ago the lovely Leandra of Madame Queen contacted us and asked if we'd help her figure out what to buy for fall. She writes:

I am mostly worried about fall clothes because I've done some updating of my spring/summer wardrobe this summer.  I've started reading some style blogs and I've started becoming a little more adventurous.

There is a lot of black in my fall/winter wardrobe.  I love black.  BUT, I'm kind of getting tired of it.  I work (in a) development office so I need to look professional, but not necessarily business-suit-professional.  I can definitely get away with some casual and/or funky pieces, which I love but am often afraid to try.

I think at this point I would like to find some things that add to my basics.  I love shoes and bags but am very rough on them and so am hesitant to spend a ton of money on either.  My budget for the whole project is not huge.  I don't really like to spend more than $50 on any one item (I am a sale rack junkie).  Ideally I would love to get a few different clothing items and maybe one pair of fun/funky shoes and a couple of really great accessories.  I love necklaces and jewelry.

I will tell you a little bit about my body shape, etc.  I'm 5' 4" and weigh 150 lbs (though I hope to change that with the boot camp I'm starting soon).  People always tell me that I don't look like I weigh that much, which is a compliment, I guess?  I'm somewhat pear shaped -- I'm easily a 6/8 on the top, but a good solid 10 on the bottom.  Also, I'm almost 38 years old.

After asking a million or so more questions, we got to work.

Leandra likes color and isn't afraid of prints, so we chose some animal prints and a few bold graphic prints to  help to liven up her basic work wardrobe. I really like pairing a print skirt with a plain top and fun necklace  or doing the opposite by taking a basic dress and adding crazy accessories. So, along with graphic prints, we added a fun pair of shoes, a few statement necklaces and a neutral wear-with-everything bag. Here's the mood board:

Here are a few outfits we put together:

This was a fun project! I hope Leandra will report back and let us know what she bought and how it worked with her existing wardrobe.

  1. Love it! Leopard is everywhere... even if in just the smallest detail for Fall.

Oh, I got that navy blue bag from F21. I didn't realize it when I got it but it's a copy of the Chloe Marcie bag! The copy is made pretty well for F21, def has some structure to it! I really like the neat hardware on it too.

  3. Sorry I've been MIA -- I'm home sick today. But, I LOVE IT!! All of it. I definitely feel like it's "me" but better, you know? Also, most of the things in the first mood board are easily within my price range and the few that aren't I can either splurge on or find a replacement.

I'm so glad you did this for me because I would never have thought to pair some of those necklaces with some of those shirts, etc. I would have been too afraid that they didn't "go together." Thanks for helping me branch out, you guys!! I can't wait to get some of these things and take some pictures to send you!

  5. I love these ideas. I'm also sad the Velet Eden blazer is sold out! Any other good recommendations for a fall blazer?

  6. Give it a few more weeks! Most of the fall clothes aren't in stores yet, so hard to say. I do know that J. Crew had a couple of really nice blazers last fall.
