BUY THIS (So We Don't Have To): Old Navy Summer Play Clothes!

Look, we all need play clothes, especially in the summer, right?  Old Navy has always been my go-to for inexpensive shorts and fun summer tops so I thought I'd take a look to see what they have going on this summer. So much cute stuff! Like, this swimsuit cover up is ridiculously pretty and looks expensive. I also love some of the cute graphic tees. Plus, they're giving an extra 20% off automatically and go through eBates for 4% cash back. Here's what I like:

Outfit of the Day: Shopping My Closet (If I Must.)

I haven't really bought any new summer clothes except for sandals and I'm starting to feel it. I should just hit up LOFT soon or something because it's getting real sad up in my closet. Today's outfit is mostly really old stuff that I hadn't worn in a while and I was surprised it all still fit! (Surprised and relieved.) Anyway, here is what I have going on:

Not bad! I am actually pretty happy with this. I'm wearing an old Banana Republic tank that's made of some kind of slub cotton/linen blend and it's nice because it's longer in the back and has a light, loose swing. This one by Graham and Spencer is a more expensive version but, honestly, this one from The Gap looks pretty good too. For something slightly dressier, I like this linen blend chevron tank from BR.

My pants are not from Target for once! I pulled out an old pair of skinny utility pants from J.Crew and was delighted that I could still get them buttoned. I love a washed olive green as a neutral and luckily J.Crew has a few good options - this cargo toothpick style and a non-cargo slim chino in the same color. There's also this pair at Nordstrom that are less expensive and look really similar to mine.

Look, I know my Universal Thread denim jacket is getting a lot of screen time but I literally wear it 3-4 times a week. It's so good that I am contemplating buying a backup. I'm also contemplating this Madewell denim jacket because those copper buttons, y'all. I am really into the copper buttons. I also love this darker wash version and holy crap someone stop me. Look, If you don't have a denim jacket I suggest you start with the one from Target. It's a great entry-level jacket.

Speaking of Target, I basically planned my whole outfit around this chunk of labradorite goodness which is also from the Universal Thread line. Apparently it's out of stock online but you can still find it in stores. There's also a mini version that is still available online.

I haven't used my backpack lately so I busted it out and then felt dumb for not using it. It's so nice! It's by Aimee Kestenberg and Marianne found it at TJ Maxx a while back. There's one with a gold zipper at Off 5th and also one in a beautiful dove grey. There's also a snakeskin version on deep clearance at Lord and Taylor! It's weird, but I don't hate it.

I love my silver Birkenstock Arizonas so much, you guys. They make me happy every time I look at them. Again, if you have been considering them, just do it. They're worth every comfortable, shiny penny.

PS. Just a head's up that Aerie is doing their 10 pairs of undies for $35 deal which ends today! It includes all styles including my favorite, the seamless cutout boybrief.

We Discuss: Bralettes, Televsion and Friendship. And Shoes.

A: Why can’t I find a cute bralette that actually fits me?

M: Well honestly because you want more support than a bralette can give you

M: That said Soma has one I’m interested in.

M: And Lively

A: Hmm

A: The Soma that was right across the street from work is GONE so the only one in town is in Hell. I just haven’t made it out there yet.

M: Gah

A: Lively looks promising!

M: Supposed to be for boobs but I’m as always skeptical

A: I am too, but am just tired of my granny bras

M: My friend Danielle just ordered some swimsuits from them and she has big boobs.

M: Unrelated I am rewatching Younger because the next season is coming soon and I forgot just how much I love it.

A: I don’t know this show?

M: WHAT

M: It’s on Hulu!

M: Perfect summer show!

A: OMG, thank you. I have been watching Luther and Handmaid’s Tale and shit is DARK.

M: No no you need Younger.

A: Thank you! I have been looking for something fun to watch.

M:You’ll love it

A: I totally caved on the summer FabFitFun summer box. It’s got some good shit in it.

M: Ooh like what?

A: It’s a little confusing because you get to pick between different items, but there’s a Tarte palette and one of those Foreo face cleaner thingies. I am especially into the Yumi Kim train case:

A: Also, since I'm now part of the matrix* you can get $10 off your first box with my link.

M: Oh I saw that train case, it looks really good.

A: The train case is why I caved.

M: Nice

M: You’ll have to tell me what you think. I am always looking for THE travel toiletry case. I bought one recommended on Forever 35 before I stopped listening to it and it’s only good for like 2 day trips, otherwise it doesn’t hold everything.

A: Oh, I almost bought that before I realized they’re both dingbats. Sweet dingbats, but still.

M: They really are.

M: At least it was cheap but it’s ugly.

A: Yeah

M: Ooh that FabFitFun towel looks good too, though microfiber gives me the heebs.

A: You get the towel OR the train case.

M: Right

M: Microfiber is icky the way it sticks.

A: I can handle it in my hair turban wrap thing but barely.

M: Yeah like if you have any dry skin at all.

M: shudder

A: YES

A: GOD

A: I thought I was the only one!

M: creepy

A: It’s awful

A: I will report back on the box!

M: Oh! The Toms shoes came and I’m wearing them right now! I like them a lot.

A: YAY

M: Wearing with my best Elio’s Mom skirt.

A: OMG they’re great!

M: Aren’t they?

M: Seriously perfect

A: That is your Universal Thread skirt?

M: Yup!

M: Finally got the nerve to wear it

M: I’ve gotten lots of compliments

A: I’m sure!

M: I just feel very hip and ass forward but my friends on set have assured me it’s flattering.

A: But there’s nothing wrong with being shaped like a lady! Fashion is so strange.

M: Yeah I know it’s definitely my own hangup.

A: Good for you for trying something new and not entirely comfortable.

M: It feels a lot more successful than the jeans I had to change out of midday.

A: Oh man

M: ðŸ˜¬

A: So good

A: Are those your birthday shoes?

M: Yes!

M: They will definitely require some breaking in but they are well made.

M: And it’s nice to have a summer shoe with a closed toe for once.

A: I made a Perfume Mistake this morning and I have so much regret.

M: Uh oh what perfume

A: I got this sample of YSL Black Opium and had no intention of smelling it until the podcast I was listening to RAVED about it.

A: It came in this little vial where you have to break off the top. Like, what could go wrong?

M: Oh. Oh dear.

A: I smell VERY INTENSE SO INTENSE

M: Ack

A: I have swabbed myself with alcohol wipes but it’s not even taking the edge off. Help.

M: Sandblasting is the only option.

A: I thought about fire.

M: BTW Danielle said her Lively swimsuit and bralette are great, she’s a DD.

A: Did she get the busty bralette?

M: Yes. Now I want one but I am broke.

A: I’m gonna get one. Also, Kate, who is my Costco connection, got me a two-pack of these Felina lace bralettes and I think they might be good.

M: Oh that’s exciting!

A: I still want the Lively one but these might satisfy my need for a non-granny option for now.

M: Costco-related--I just found out that their Kirkland Professional Series moisturizing shampoo and conditioner is the Pureology Shampoo/Conditioner that I LOVE and is like $30 for a tiny bottle.

M: I am shook

A: Um

A: I am pretty sure I blogged about this, like, three years ago.

M: whatttttt

M: hahahaaaaa

A: Girl

M: I mean I retain 7% of the information I am told on a daily basis so.

M: But you didn’t mention it when I bought it at TJ Maxx!!

A: I’m sorry!  I just forgot. I have been buying that stuff at Costco forever but then I got tired of it because the bottles are huge.

M: Well it’s brand new information for my goldfish brain so I am excited except I don’t have a Costco membership.

A: I just make Kate buy me stuff.

A: I just searched the blog and maybe I never mentioned it? I am angry at myself.

M: That makes me feel better

A: I’ve let everyone down

M: Way to go, Red

A: I am a monster

M: The more important thing is *I* feel better that I didn’t just forget.

A: I am certain I must have told you at some point.

M: Lalalala can’t hear you.

A: ANYWAY, I have giant bottles of the stuff that I’ll never use up so just come over and wash your hair any time.

M: What a generous offer!

M: I mean with how often I wash my hair driving 7 hours to do it might work.

A: It’s an option that’s open to you, is all I’m saying.

M: True friend

A: BEST EVER RIGHT

*my referral code! Just FYI  I was not given the box - I paid for it with my own dollars.

Stuff I Like: Wearing, Watching, Listening, Reading.

Hi hi hi! I've decided to stop hating everything long enough to like a few things to tell y'all about. Isn't that a relief? Just kidding, I like stuff basically too much. Here's what I'm digging this week:

This Lip Balm That Is The Literal Best.
I think I mentioned recently that I got a deluxe sample size of this Fresh Sugar Lip Caramel balm and I’m SO INTO IT. I love it so much I bought a full size version and gave it to Marianne for her birthday. Here’s what she has to say about it: “I keep this on my nightstand because it is the BEST before-bed lip balm ever. It’s never, ever sticky and I wake up with my lips still feeling super soft and moisturized. I LOVE it.” So, there you go. It’s fancy lip balm that smells like caramel and it’s under $20. Treat yo’ self.

This Video Which Proves Tiffany Haddish Is a National Treasure.
I’m not even going to explain too much about this amazing story except that it involves Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, a Groupon, a swamp tour and a whole lot of weed. Enjoy:

This Arctic Monkeys Album That Has Me Charmed.
If you’re an Arctic Monkeys fan you might have strong feelings about the new album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino. It’s a concept album involving a lounge act... on a moon colony. It’s a lot to take in but it’s SO WEIRD AND GOOD. It keeps getting compared to Bowie which I don’t hear at all but I do really like it. It’s strange, kind of jazz-y and a total departure. It’s also fucking funny. Humor is one of the things I’ve always loved best about Arctic Monkeys and this album just kills it. “What do you mean you’ve never seen Blade Runner?”

This Nick Hornby Book That Was An Emergency Read.
I forgot my Kindle last week and didn’t want to eat my lunch without something to read (gasp!) so I hustled over to the library and checked out the first thing that looked vaguely promising. It was Nick Hornby’s Funny Girl and I was immediately ALL IN. I’ve read and enjoyed a few of his books but this one really speaks to my interests: Television, comedy, witty banter, the 60s, a charming female main character?  It’s got everything. I'm not even halfway through it yet so if it goes south I’ll let you know.

That's it for this week! By the time you're reading this I'm going to be on my way to NYC for a vacation with my boyfriend. We're going to see David Bowie Is and also a Yankees game! (Something for everyone, right?)

Outfit of the Day: Aggressive German Comfort Meets Disco Ball.

Hi there! This week I'm wearing a new favorite with an old favorite. I know the more blog-weary of you are probably all, "Girl, you say everything is your favorite." To that I say: favorite is a tier not a single object. Also, it's really not true - I have stuff I keep wearing that I complain about every single time. Delightful! Anyway:

I love this dress. It's from LOFT last year and it just makes me happy. The colors are fun, the fit is forgiving, it works for a night out with heels or for work with flats or sandals. Loft makes this kind of dress every year - this striped version looks very summery but you're gonna need a slip (which you should be doing anyway.) I also love this fun print version. There's also this amazing ikat dot print dress with sleeves, which will be nice if you work in a freezer office like I do. There are also quite a few options in the dress sale section including this adorable zebra print dress

I am giving up on cardigans right now because it's too much to think about and I'm picky. Instead I've been throwing a chambray shirt over everything because why not. The one I'm wearing is J.Crew via Poshmark - I'm pretty sure it's this one. Let me tell you, this shirt is LEGIT. It's a good, weighty fabric, excellent snap buttons and a comfortable fit. It's just really damn good. If you're not into J.Crew how about this sharp version from Levi's? I can also recommend Old Navy chambray if you want something a bit lighter. Also, how cute is this chambray blazer from Loft? I might have to track that down. Details:

I'm keeping things light today and just wearing my silver necklace from My Precious Studio. That shirt tho. It's just...really good.

I'm carrying my same old MBMJ hobo which is still available in black. It's a good one! But let's get down to the thing my title is referencing, my amazing Birkenstocks. Yes, I caved and the silver Birkenstock Arizonas are MINE ALL MINE. You guys, I do not regret this purchase one tiny bit. They are so good and I love the shiny metallic craziness of them. If you're considering them, just go for it. They also come in a lovely rose-gold/copper which is pretty great.

What, you want another picture of them? No? Here's one anyway! They must be popular because all the foot fetish creepers have been liking my IG pic of them. Heh.

BUY THIS (So We Don't Have To): Shoes.com Friends & Family!

Shoes.com has some great deals going on right now! Get $40 off $99 with F&F code EMLFNFUPGRADE or 30% off with code FLASH30. Plus, go through eBates for 10.0% cash back! There are exclusions (including Birkenstock - trust me, I tried) but I found a bunch of other great options including my awesome Kenneth Cole sandals which come in several colors. Here's what I like:

These are Dolce Vita and I love the dark wood block heel! They also come in a caramel color with a slightly higher heel, but I think the low heel looks very walkable.

I have these in gold and love them! The gold is sold out but the silver is so perfect for summer and they also have a beautiful red suede version and yellow! You guys, the yellow.

These Vince Camuto suede slides in that blush pink color that's super on-trend? They will get you a million compliments.  They also come in red and black.

Look, I know you're probably not into buying boots right before summer starts but the Sam Edelman Petty boot is basically perfect and a total steal right now. Just consider it, is all I'm saying.

These cute little wedge sandals are by UGG! I am not kidding. I was surprised that UGG wasn't excluded so definitely take advantage if you've always wanted, say, a pair of cozy UGG slippers

On a more practical note, these are Marianne's favorite sneakers and the code makes them really affordable. (I don't know about you, but when Marianne likes something, I almost immediately want it.)

Oh hey, they have bags too. How freaking crazy gorgeous is this lapis blue Vince Camuto tote? I MEAN. I also really like this print tote which reminds me of a Goyard aka thing I can't afford ever.

Happy shopping! I do love a code/free shipping/good eBates combo. So satisfying.

We Discuss: My Pyro Tendencies

A: I need your help with something very important.

M: What’s up

A: I have a $50 gc for Sephora from my health insurance incentives program. I feel like I should blow it all on something I wouldn’t spend my own money on.

M: Hahaa

A: This is important!

A: I am thinking about that fancy Givenchy powder with the four colors:

M: Hrm

A: I know. It's supposed to be amazing.

A: I could also get some RMS stuff.

M: I personally can’t get excited about powder.

A: Some dumb podcast guest made me want it.

M: ðŸ™„

M: Haha

A: But it’s something I’d never buy.

M: You’ve been wanting to try more RMS.

A: Yes, but WHAT.

M: Have you tried the Un Cover-up yet?

A: No, but I have, like, three different concealers going right now.

M: I also highly recommend my new coconut water primer:

A: I cannot get excited about primer.

M: Haha

A: Not even good primer.

M: Get the powder if you want it!

A: Re. primer, I'm getting ANOTHER sample of Porefessional in my Sephora box. Why.

A: But! I’m also getting your Kat Von D eyeliner along with, I’m sure, some dry shampoo I won't use and a neutral lipstick I can't wear.

M: Lolol

A: I’m excited about the eyeliner even though I'm historically Not Good with liquid liner.

M: I love it but I will admit I was apparently born with the ability to do liquid eyeliner quickly and well.

A: Ugh

A: Anyway, why is it so hard to spend this GC? It’s $50 of free shit.

M: See I think we have different approaches.

M: I would be stoked to get one of my standbys for free rather than possibly blow $50 on something I may not love.

A: Well, everything is returnable at Sephora and, oh! Your primer is being offered as a sample!

M: Oh nice! I got like 6 samples of it from Ulta so that’s how I fell in love with it.

A: Apparently the Givenchy powder is scented like roses so nope to that.

M: Ew no

A: Old lady powder

A: I might get ones of the RMS palettes:

M: Oooh

A: And…the gift card is coming back invalid.

M: Goddammit!

A: I am so annoyed! I’m going to lose my good samples.

A: I am going to burn this GC company to the ground.

M: Argh so annoying.

A: Customer service was like, “enter the number it without the spaces”

A: Like I’m new.

M: Lolol

M: Have you tried restarting the computer.

M: hahahaha

A: I'm gonna try lighting it on fire, brb.

Outfit of the Day: That Red Top!

You guys. YOU GUYS. That red Universal Thread top Marianne and I keep yammering about? I first tried it on here but I didn't buy it. Marianne, however, did and it looked so cute on her that I finally bought it too. It's SO GOOD:

I know! This top is on sale for less than $10 right now and is basically made of gauze but it's just so freaking cute and comfortable and, as Marianne said, just the thing to wear on the weekend with jorts (which is exactly what I did last Saturday.) It's great tucked in but is very freeing just worn as is:

I'd originally tried it on in a small which fit fine but was a bit on the short side so I ordered a medium for the length. It's a departure for me, but this kind of top is just perfect for summer. If you're not into $10 gauze tops, I have options for you! Madewell has a few similar styles - I especially love this pompom blouse which looks like the floaty best thing ever and this yellow one is interesting. I also like this blue striped version of course.  Gap has a nice looking chambray version and LOFT has a cute one in solid red

I'm wearing my Target top with Madewell boyjeans that I bought on Poshmark. These are super comfortable and awesome but definitely go down a size or two - they run big. Just FYI - Universal Thread has some really nicely beat up boyfriend jeans that I haven't had a chance to check out! Has anyone tried them? The reviews look pretty positive. I'm also curious about these button fly jean shorts even though I know better.

Here's a closer look. I'm wearing the top with my favorite Soko Paddle pendant necklace because it basically works with everything. It also comes in a mini version now, which of course I want.

Still carrying my blue MBMJ bag. I know I always link this blue D&B bag as a "similar" but it's just so good! Very sleek. Also, this Louise et Cie peacock hobo is gorgeous and is under $200 (put it in your cart to get the discount!) Finally, I'm wearing my beloved copper Birkenstock Gizehs which are the best. The end.

Stuff I Swear By: Clothes and Shoes

From time to time I talk about the stuff that I swear by - items I've bought repeatedly and/or brands to which I'm very loyal. Generally I'm fickle and always looking for my next favorite but when I find something I really love and that works for me? I cling to it. Here are a few of my favorites for clothes and shoes, starting with underthings:

I have a drawer full of these and every year I buy a few more to replace the pairs that have worn out. It's the only thong underwear I've ever found comfortable and they come in a million colors. I like the classic rise version.

These are a newish addition but I bought a few pairs and a few months later bought ALL the pairs because they're that good. Comfortable, stay in place, kind of sporty, inexpensive!

I stray occasionally but generally Natori is the brand I go to for well-fitting, good quality bras. Currently I have two of this style and I'm REAL TIRED of wearing them (they don't seem to want to wear out) so I think it's time to see what else Natori has for me.

I have three or four pairs of the Spanx Tight End tights and they are not fucking around. They hold you in and last forever. If you're not into the Spanx part, I also love Commando tights - super black, super opaque and they have a nice soft panel waistband that doesn't cut in.

Y'all know I love me some Bombas socks. The ankle socks are my go-to gym socks but I also like them for wearing with booties for a no-sock look. They also make no-shows that actually stay on my heels! I have a drawer full of Bombas and always want more. (Go through my link and get 25% off your first order!)

I mean, duh. Y'all know this. Currently I have three pairs of Madewell jeans and they're the jeans that get worn the most in my closet. They are good quality and just have that look that is cool. I don't know how else to explain it. My current favorites are the Boyjean (size down) and the Skinny High Rise coated.

I have a ridiculous amount of Everlane cotton v-neck tees. They're $15 each and are the kind of t-shirts that just get softer and better with age. I will say that the heathered version tends to lose it's shape really fast but they'e the best for sleeping in.

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS. I have four pairs of Birkenstocks (and a silver pair on my brain) and three of them have the soft footbed. They are SO GOOD. Somewhere along the way I just stopped wearing heels in the summer and all I want on my feet is Birkenstocks. It's a slippery slope. Just an aside: my friend Nina, who likes nice things, totally swears by the EVA version of the Birkenstock Arizona. She wears hers constantly and says they're just as comfortable. I cannot attest to this but they are certainly less expensive!

This is kind of a dumb one to include because Marc By Marc is no more (though NR still has a small selection), but you guys know I have a small collection of MBMJ bags and they just work for me. I've also owned quite a few that I ended up selling (some with regret) but I'm always keeping an eye on Poshmark and eBay for bargains. (They're not super popular right now so if you've ever wanted one, get to searching! They're going super cheap.)

It’s expensive and I usually wait for a sale but I have two pairs of the Chaturanga capris and three mesh tanks and they get worn pretty much every week. They look good, hold up well and function properly - nothing rides up or slides down.

For sport bras I love the Lululemon energy bra (I have three) but I am going to try Athleta’s version because LL has been having continuous quality issues and every time I read the reviews I’m like...nope.

For casual sneakers I love my Nike Junvenate pair a lot. I really need to get a new pair soon because I've worn my old pair into the ground! They're really light weight, pack well and you don't even have to wear socks with them (though I do.)

For performance sneakers I don't really have a good answer. My running shoes are...ha, I can't even remember. They were on sale? I don't even know. (They're fine but I can't get excited about them and I hate running.) For other non-running purposes I like Inov-8 because they fit me well and are easy to find on sale. 6pm has a bunch! I have a pair that I bought for Crossfit and also a pair of trail runners for hiking.

I'll post about skincare and makeup later in the week! Now, please tell me what you swear by.
