Outfit of the Day: Summer Wardrobe Ennui (and Looking Forward!)

It's back to being August-in-the-south hot so I just keep on wearing the same stuff every week. That said,I have a few new fall-winter items that I'm really excited about so I threw them on just to keep hope alive that I will be able to wear them soon. Here's what I've got:

No big surprises here. I'm wearing my fun striped top from Loft that I've posted about quite a few times. It's nearly sold out but this one is really similar with a red stripe and this one has the twist on the sleeve, which is fun. ALSO this twist tank is super cute and practically free and I am IGNORING THE LOFT SALE. Here's a terrible photo in which I try to show you the back of my shirt:

Derp. Oh! And last week I had a reader ask about tucking stuff in. I am bad at it but with the boyfriend jeans you should do at least a half-tuck. I mean, this is what it looks like when you don't:

Ehhhhh. It's not terrible but I definitely look more proportional and pulled together with the shirt tucked a bit. My jeans are Madewell Slim Boyjeans and I LOVE THEM SO MUCH.  Slouchy, casual and very current. The raw hem version is on sale right now as is the high-rise version! I also found the non-high-rise version (which is what I wear) at Nordstrom. On to details:

I'm wearing an old Madewell pendant that is pretty similar to this gorgeous necklace. I'm also wearing a Bijouone bracelet that's a shameless knockoff of the Miansai Modern Screw Cuff.

And...my usual boring MBMJ hobo (in red here, similar here) and cute gold Sam Edelman flats instead of Birkenstocks! You're welcome. NOW. Here is what I am looking forward to wearing:

Boots!! The story of these boots was posted in June and every now and then I take them out and try them on. They're so gooooood. I can't find them online but this pair is as close as I can get for Madewell. It's still early to be looking at boots, but this pair by Lucky Brand is similar and well-priced!

Just a close-up! They're so pretty. I need to get some suede protector spray or just wrap them in plastic or something. Eep. OKAY. Now, the final thing. Back in the spring I fell in love with a 1K Veda Jayne leather jacket I rented from Rent The Runway. I stalked and stalked and stalked and stalked and finally found one on eBay I could afford:

It's so pretttttyyyyy. I am almost positive this Veda jacket is a RTR castoff (it has the barcode on the tag and everything) which means it's been ridden hard. I like that it's broken in but I really need to condition it and get that broken buckle fixed. Anyway, it's so pretty and looks great hanging next to it's new bestie, my Madewell leather jacket. I am a nerd.

Look how happy I am! Gray leather jackets are hard to find (especially right now) but this cropped version is pretty sweet and here's a great looking faux leather jacket. I also love this one at Barneys Warehouse but sizing is limited. Or, just be like me and go buy a trashed one for too much money on eBay and totally bust your no-buy. (I AM BAD AT NO-BUYS YOU GUYS.)

Week Four: Stuff I Didn't Buy (And Stuff We Definitely Did.)

Oh you guys. I know. If you follow us on IG you might know that Marianne and I got into a little trouble this past weekend. It tends to happen when I get together IRL with long distance besties but you know what? We needed a little quality retail therapy and IT WAS WORTH IT.

First, here's what I didn't buy last week:

  • This striped tee from Everlane (which I might eventually buy because my best long-sleeved black and white striped tee has died):

  • This amazing necklace that's on the TJ Maxx site right now:

  • This rad Bowie tee because I'm never not looking:

  • Alllll the mascara, but especially this one.

And then Marianne and I had a lovely 24 hours together and suddenly we were at the Kiehl's counter to get samples of a Vitamin C product she was curious about and we both ended up with these kits:

AND THEN. Then we went to Anthropologie (it was 20% off day 🤷🏽‍♀️) and I happened upon this jacket:

I pawed at it and then went for the price tag and Marianne was all, "dun dun dunnnnn...how much?" and we were shocked because it was not $400 like we were both assuming. It was under $100, y'all. It totally fooled me, this soft vegan jacket that drapes like a dream. LIKE A DREAM. It's basically the wine cardigan of the jacket world and the next thing we knew we'd both bought it.

And if you're thinking, "you both already have multiple olive green jackets" we would both be all, SHUT UP THIS ONE IS TOTALLY DIFFERENT because it really is. I have posted a bad selfie photo of it on IG but I promise an outfit soon because it's my new favorite thing and I'm totally wearing it on my trip.

Week Three: Stuff We Didn't Buy Last Week (and a few things we did)

Adrien: I did not buy EVERYTHING NEW AT MADEWELL. And also this stuff:

  • ALL THE SHOES AT MADEWELL ESPECIALLY THESE:

Marianne: I didn't buy this dress that I STILL WANT:

But um, I totally bought three dresses this week. And those H&M jeans that I returned in a bigger size. FORGIVE ME FATHER I HAVE AN EVENT AND I PANIC SHOPPED PLUS I HAD STORE CREDIT. Ahem. But seriously, I am hoping that one of the three work and then I'll return the other two.

ANYWAY the dress is "summer dinner" WTF does that mean? I bought these:

A: I granted you permission to buy a dress for that event! It's understandable.

M: You said ONE dress, not three, and definitely not the jeans.

A: I can’t even give you shit because I have a confession.

M: What did you do?

A: *fails to respond in a timely manner because life things happened*

M: I’m waiting

A: Sorry! Okay, so remember that Veda leather jacket (in gray) I rented from Rent the Runway?

M: GURL WHAT DID YOU DO

A: Listen, I've been looking for one since last winter and it finally showed up on eBay and I literally lost my mind for a minute. Like, I left my body and floated above my computer.

M: Awwwww, well it's hardly an impulse purchase. You loved it! Was it a steal?

A: Depends on your definition, but I think I got an excellent deal. We shall see!

M: It's so beautiful and you'll love it forever.

A: You are my very favorite enabler.

Week Two: Things Marianne Didn't Buy In August.

M: I didn’t buy:

I did buy:
  • The Sound of Music on vinyl for the kids
  • Measuring cups because the 1/3 cups are still MIA and I consider this an emergency.
  • A raincoat for Lulu because whoops she didn’t have one and whoops she needed one.

A: Those silver mules, man.

M: THEY BURN THE PRECIOUSSSSSS

A: You know how I feel about metallic shoes.

M: I’ve worn the crap out of my cheap Target silver flats this summer.

A: My silver Birkenstocks are my #1.

A: That isn’t a perfect sweater.

A: But I only say that because it’s H&M which never fits me.

M: Shut up no one asked you!

A: YOU ASKED ME

M: Hahaha

M: Well it fits meeeeee

A: HOW dO YOU KNOE

M: Don’t bring logic to this party.

A: You yelled at me for trying on the Target pants!

M: I feel like this dress is VERY Elio's Mom.

A: WHY ARE YOU LOOKING. But yes, it is!

M: FACEBOOK KEEPS SHOWING ME SHIT

A: Mmm hmm

Week Two: Things Adrien Didn't Buy In August.

Here is what I did NOT buy this past week:

  • THE PLAID PANTS (which are so good! SO GOOD. They'll be mine in September.)

Here's what I did buy:

from Amazon:

From Dermstore (25% off with code BIRTHDAY):

These are all staples that I'm either running low on or completely out of so not cheating! I normally would have bought allllll kinds of crap with that discount code.

Coming up next: Marianne's Week Two list.

Week One: Things We Didn't Buy In August.

A: So, what did you NOT buy last week?

M: I didn’t buy:

- Rachel Comey Tulip Sandals in the color I don’t want.

- Social Print Studio prints, magnets, and photo books from our last two trips.

- Tropical print swimsuit from Amazon.

- $15 Madewell boardwalk sandals that were a half size too small.

- Two long sleeved shirts for Hugo.

- New measuring cups even though we have two sets but are missing BOTH 1/3 cups.

- An overpriced Kule t-shirt:

M: I did buy:

- A record player for Chris’s birthday and records!

A: Aw, a record player! Please tell me about these Rachel Comey sandals.

M: This is the color I want but I found them in a color I DON’T want for $130 (on eBay):

M: QUESTION if I return stuff to H&M can I use that money to buy other stuff? No. The answer is no. FYI the dress I thought would be too short is very cute, the weird green pants are okay but I won’t wear them, and the jeans were cute but tiny.

A: No! You just return things and keep the money and buy nothing with it.

M: sigh.

A: Sorry.

M: I thought about trying a larger size of the jeans but I don’t need them.

A: There will still be black jeans in September.

A: My list of things I didn’t buy last week:

- A pair of Rothy’s flats

- Anything with the Madewell $25 off code they sent me (RUDE.)

- That $13 dress from Loft that I hope is sold out.

- This dumb shirt from Target:

- Glossier cloud paint

- Fancy $300 Birkenstocks

M: UGH

A: Samantha Irby was interviewed on the most recent Forever35 (she’s hilarious) and she made me want the Glossier stuff.

M: I feel bad I never finished her book! I need to pick it back up when I’m done with my current library book.

M: I think Glossier is mostly snake oil.

A: I agree, and so does Samantha Irby. She said the cloud paint was good, though.

A: She also said she that Glossier ads make her feel like a haggard old crone.

M: Hahahahaha

A: The interview is worth a listen.

M: Kk

A: Anyway, we need to soldier on and continue to not buy stuff. We’re doing well!

M: We are!

M: Writing it down helps.

A: It’s like therapy.

M: Yes, like I need a rubber band to snap against my wrist when I want something.

A: I need a clicker and maybe a treat.

M: haha

We Discuss: Our Plan for August.

M: Ugh because of course Le Labo makes candles and of course they are $75.

A: Those bastards.

M: Like, goddammit you motherfuckers.

M: Also today I heard an IT person say “why does it always smell so good over here.”

M: And three different people said, at the same time, that’s Marianne.

A: I’m starting to take this personally.

M: I counted today and I do five sprays total.

M: But I am also worried that I am secretly that person who wears too much perfume even though everyone swears they like it.

M: I can’t even smell it on myself any more.

A: I will let you know the next time I see you.

M: People are probably talking about me on some forum about bad coworkers.

A: Hey, at least you’re wearing too much really nice perfume.

M: Right? I am spending a lot of money for other people to smell me.

M: However yesterday I had a meeting and the guy I was meeting (who I know but not super well) was like whoa I am sorry if this is inappropriate but you smell really good.

A: GODDAMMIT

M: I’m sorrrrry

A: It does smell really good but apparently I am not wearing enough.

M: Have you tried this:

A: That seems like an expensive delivery method.

M: I think you mean effective.

A: Oh, okay

M: If I’m going on a no-buy I need to stop reading the few blogs I still do.

M: Makes me so wanty.

A: It’s so hard to find good sales for the blog and not buy stuff for myself.

A: Who are you reading?

M: Oh Kim France mainly.

M: Who I can’t even afford.

A: Nope, she is another level.

A: I’m still gonna read her book.

M: Haha same.

M: Andrea Linett is a little better but I don’t need anything!

A: I just keep reminding myself that I’ll have more shopping money for my trip if I don’t buy garbage right now

***

A: So, you’re in for a no-buy month for August? I need the moral support.

M: Yes. I already have 4 things on my list that I thought about buying and didn’t.

M: JUST TODAY.

A: WELL DONE.

A: I was all sad because I didn’t buy that caramel lip balm. As if it will cease to exist after August.

A: 🙄

M: We are crazeeee.

A: So my rules - I can buy the services I already have scheduled (hair, etc) and I can rebuy products I use on the reg. Otherwise, nothing.

A: No shoes, no clothes, no makeup.

M: Same.

A: One month! We can do this.

M: And really I’m trying to use up beauty stuff instead of replacing. Like I’m low on my Supergoop CC cream but I have 1/4 full bottles of some other stuff that’s fine just not AS good

M: I am going to have to replace my primer though.

A: That is allowed.

M: Every week I will send you my list of what I didn’t buy, because I am writing it all down to shame myself.

A: Yes! I’ll do that too. This is so sad. I blame Goop.

M: That bitch.

A: Worst.
