Review: Madewell Oversized Leather Jacket vs. Quince Motorcycle Jacket.

Alternate title: A Tale Of Two Jackets. So! Last week I ordered two leather jackets purely for blog science because how else will we know? I've been extremely curious about Madewell's Oversized Washed Leather Jacket, and since it wasn't excluded from the most recent sale, I ordered the fatigue green version when it was 30% off.  I'd also read the glowing reviews of Quince's $150 Leather Motorcycle Jacket and it was back in stock, so I ordered that in the burgundy color. Let's start with the Madewell jacket:

Okay, right out of the box I was super into the color. The photos of this jacket on the Madewell site are terrible and don't do it justice at all. It's like they don't want you to buy it! The pics of the black version are way better but that dark green with the brass hardware? So good.

The washed leather is lightweight and already has a broken-in feel and the hardware felt substantial. I ordered a medium based on reviews because I wanted it big enough to wear a light sweater underneath but not so big that it swallowed me up. The sizing was perfect for me - slightly oversized feeling but not too big. The sleeves were surprisingly short for a leather jacket which worked for me but if you're tall this might be an issue.

I do love that this jacket isn't cropped but it also means that it's a lot of jacket just hanging around when unzipped. I wasn't sure if I loved the look on me but that color! So good. Then I tried to zip it up. It's big enough that I could easily zip it...if the freaking zipper worked. Womp.

I spent a lot of time trying to zip that dumb jacket up and the zipper would not budge. I read back through the reviews for the black version and apparently this is a really common issue for this jacket. For something that costs $500+ retail, the zipper should work, right? I ended up returning it.

Now, let's look at the Quince motorcycle jacket:

I mean, hello baby. This jacket is gorgeous. The color is ridiculously good and I don't even think my photos do it justice. This is a pretty traditional moto style jacket in buttery leather with silver hardware. It comes in three colors but I chose the burgundy because it looked like a color that would work well with my wardrobe and obviously I think it's beautiful. (Plus, I already have a black leather jacket.)

The leather is very soft and pretty thin, so it's not the quality of, say, an AllSaints jacket, but for the price it is a surprisingly nice jacket. I ordered a large because I wanted room for a sweater (my AllSaints Dalby is very fitted) and I wanted to be able to comfortably zip it up:

No problem! I could probably wear a medium if I wanted a more fitted look. The belt is attached but the hardware is lightweight so it's not too annoying to have the buckle end flapping around. The zipper is likewise not super heavy duty but it works just fine and overall I am really pleased with this jacket.

I mean, for $150, are you kidding me? Of course I'm keeping it. I'm happy to answer questions about either jacket! Please comment below.

If you're tempted and want $20 off your first purchase, please use my link. (Full disclosure: for each purchase through my link I receive credits to spend which allows me to try and review more stuff. I paid for a portion of this jacket with credits, so thank you to those of you who used my link!)

PS. My shoes are the Madewell Harper Mule and my jeans are an older pair of Madewell Boyjeans

We Discuss: Fall Wanty.

A: I can't stop thinking about that Hammitt bag AND I want a Clare V snakeskin bag. Why am I like this?

M: You are just Fall Wanty

M: I think the only bag I’m keeping an eye out for this fall is the Grande Fanny either in the perforated black or caramel color:

A: I love that. Grande fanny!

M: I am making my fall shopping list though! I want some straight or wide leg pants (my white whale tbh, they never look right on me), a Veronica Beard dickey blazer, and probably a new wool winter coat. I haven’t bought a new dressier coat in years, just puffers haha. I also want some buttery soft loafers (I mean the dream is Gucci but yeah)

M: Also, two of my friends are currently obsessed with this shirt (with bike shorts and Birks of course) so I have my eye out for a sale or code:

A: That is SO GOOD

M: I know, it's like perfect

A: I rarely ever do button up shirts but that one looks soft and comfortable

M: The cut is just right too. Like where the buttons hit are just right and the butt covering in the back.

A: Perfection

M: Not exactly wide leg but I want to try these:

A: Well thanks a lot, now I want both those too

M: Haha

A: I mostly just want All The Bags right now

A: Wait, I also want this necklace set but it needs to be on sale:

A: It’s not even expensive, just the principle of the thing

M: Haha

A: I saw it in store and it’s really pretty with the freshwater pearl

+++

M: Me: Definitely not shopping any more for a while.

M: Also me: 👀

A: Back Away

M: I am going to need some new furry Birks probably but it’s AUGUST MARIANNE

A: Same BUT IT IS AUGUST (though it was 45 degrees here yesterday morning. WTF, PNW.)

M: Anyway! Right now I'm focused on non-denim pants. I have my eye on these, though they are Advanced:

A: Those are so cute but involve a full tuck, for sure

M: I can do a full tuck IF I have a cute jacket or cardigan

A: Right, yes

M: These are what I would wear in a heartbeat if I were built differently:

A: Dreamy retro pants

M: I also like these possibly:

A: That elastic waistband tho

M: The kids love an elastic waist it seems

A: Oh, kids today

M: These would definitely make me cry but I like them anyway:

A: I love those in theory

M: These had potential until I saw that yoke detail that looks like a c-section scar:

A: Ha! No thank you.

M: No yoke version:

A: MUCH better

M: Ooh you know what this should be my fall experiment like the denim shirt!

A: Yessssss

M: So that’s the fatigue pants, the track trousers, the slim Emmett, and the paperboy pants.

A: YES. MAKE IT HAPPEN CANADA.

M: Everything will be here on or before August 24th! Damn I hope I like at least one pair (but damn I hope I don’t like all of them)

A: Its Madewell - half of them will fit REAL weird

M: Maybe even ALL of them

(Stay tuned!)

Review: Helly Hansen Welsey II Trench Coat

Lately I've been obsessed with getting a raincoat - a real raincoat that's actually waterproof but that doesn't look like a raincoat.  I am going to Ireland in November and part of this obsession is to have the right coat for that trip but also for life. I do have this cute thing from Costco which is good but it doesn't allow much layering underneath and I've never tested it for true waterproofness. (It's also got really shallow pockets which is such a pet peeve.)

Helly Hansen was a brand suggested to me for Real Raincoat action and I immediately fell for the Belfast Jacket. However, I want it in the ivy green which is sold out completely in my size. Of course. It's also insulated, which might be more than I really need. I'd rather have a regular raincoat that I can wear layers under because it seems like it would be more versatile. I checked out the other green Helly Hansen raincoat options and immediately fell for the Welsey II Trench. I love that it doesn't really look like a raincoat and, damn, those copper accents are SO GOOD. I found it on sale at Moosejaw so I ordered it for blog science:

It showed up crazy-fast because Moosejaw offers free 2-day shipping on items over $49. So nice! Also nice: this damn raincoat. It's looks and feels expensive and is really well-made. I LOVE the shiny copper zippers and snaps and that it has a good, deep hood that tucks into the collar when you don't need it. The zippy pockets are also deep and big enough to hold my giant cell phone securely.

Now, the negatives. The sleeves are a little too long so I have to fold the cuffs, which is annoying. Also, as much as I love a double-breasted trench, it looks like a mess if you leave it hanging open:

That is a lot of coat right there. A note on sizing: I went with a medium because I wanted enough room to wear a few layers underneath. In these photos it looks a little big on me, but I'm wearing it over a short sleeved blouse. (Also, no way would the small fit my hips.) Did I mention the copper zippers?

And here's a little spin for you so you can see the rest of it:

I am about 90% sure I'm going to keep it, though Helly Hansen has a few other nice looking raincoats that are also under consideration. The Kirkwall II Raincoat looks appealing and the Lyness II Coat also has potential. All three are on sale at Moosejaw with free 2-day shipping (though the Helly Hansen site offers free shipping on orders over $100 and free 90 day returns.) What do y'all think?

Blog Science: I Got My Brows Microbladed.

I got my brows microbladed...for science! Okay, not really. I got them microbladed because my brows had gotten thin and patchy and I was tired of filling them in every day. Could I just not? Sure, but without brows I look older and a bit washed out. Plus, it was a birthday gift to myself and I was dying to try the local artist who my (awesome) hairstylist recommended. Her brows looked amazing and I wanted in, man.

If you aren't familiar with microblading, it's a semi-permanent tattooing procedure using a hand-held tool and pigment to lightly scratch hair strokes into your face. It sounds great, right? No? Ha. Screw it, let's do this. Here's where I started:

When I was young I had really nice, thick brows. Then the 90s happened and we all waxed our brows into oblivion. I blame Drew Barrymore. I grew them back in but in the last few years they've gotten patchy and thin. Just vanishing off my face. I was REAL TIRED of filling them in so I made an microblading appointment in January.

Microblading is a two appointment process. During the first appointment she measured my face and spends quite a lot of time drawing in my new brows with a grease pencil.  Once I approved, the numbing cream went on:

Then the microblading started. The tool makes a scratching noise which is weird as hell. The first pass didn't hurt. I could sort of feel it, but it didn't hurt. The next pass? It definitely hurt. Even with more numbing cream, I could feel it. It wasn't excruciating, but I was glad when it stopped. After she was finished she put a bunch more pigment on top and I sat around and let that do it's thing:

I texted this pic to Marianne with the caption, "So natural! I love them!" Finally, I was cleaned up and sent on my way with a strict list of care instructions - Do not get them wet for two weeks. Do not sweat for two weeks. Do not touch. Do not pick. Be good. Here's what I looked like right after my first appointment:

Pretty nice. They got darker and less crisp as they healed. Here's how they looked a few days later:

Over the next two weeks they flaked and scabbed and I will spare you those photos. It was a process. It's also an enormous pain in the ass to keep your eyebrows dry for two weeks but I did it. My next appointment was seven weeks later. By then, my brows looked like this:

They were okay but I was antsy to get this whole thing finished. The second appointment is a touch-up because the pigment doesn't always completely take or it fades or spots get missed. All of this is corrected in the second appointment. I was so ready for it because, while I was enjoying my new brows, I wanted MORE. I walked in all, "Remember how I said I didn't want them too bold? Ignore that. I want more." She laughed and said everyone says that.

The second appointment was much shorter. She listened to my requests that my left brow be brought in a bit to match my right (which is my "good" brow) and she bumped it all up a little bit. This is how they looked a few days after the second appointment:

I am super happy with them! They look really natural, which is exactly what I wanted. I am not really into super groomed, sharp brows. Here's a before and after for comparison:

Quite a difference, right?  It was a process but now I get 12-18 months of just having nice brows. Sometimes I use some tinted brow gel but mostly they're good on their own. I am still digging my right brow (on the left in the pic) more but there's a small scar through my left brown that makes it a bit wonky. I swear I have never looked at my eyebrows this much in my entire life.

Questions? Concerns?

Blog Science: I Review Everlane's Linen Scoop-Neck Tee.

Marianne and I were both super curious about the Everlane Linen Scoop-Neck Tee especially since we both really like their basic cotton v-neck. I went ahead and ordered one for blog science and it arrived quickly. At first glance, I really liked it:

I ordered a medium and it fit perfectly with a loose, but not oversized, drape. I was delighted at it's lack of boxiness! The material is a super lightweight slub and felt really nice. The fit is ideal:

But then I looked in the mirror and, y'all. This shirt is completely transparent. Now, I like a sheer-ish slub tee but this one is REALLY sheer:

I'm wearing a nude bra, of course, and was like, oh, cool cool maybe it's fine and then I saw this:

That is the little gold coin decoration on my Natori bra shining through. You guys. If I can see my bra decoration through the shirt? IT IS TOO SHEER. I mean, I guess I could wear a cami under it but who wants to wear two shirts in the summer? Not me. It totally negates the purpose of the summer-weight linen. Ugh, Everlane. Why? I will say, there are lots and lots of glowing reviews for this tee on their website so maybe I'm just the only one who doesn't dig this level of sheer. Anyway, I guess will be returning it because nope.

Blog Science: We Try 16 Different Le Labo Scents in One Night.

Months ago I got an email from a really lovely reader who told me she'd bought a 16-sample Le Labo Discovery Set and would I like to be it's next recipient? Why yes, yes I would. (Thanks again, Betsey!) I tried out several but I am very sensitive to scents and there's nothing so off-putting as going through the day wearing a fragrance that's Not For You. I held onto the set until my recent visit with Marianne so we could test them all together. For Science. Blog Science.

In our very (un)scientific approach we decided to spray each one on a strip of paper and record our thoughts. (I know this isn't the optimal way to test a fragrance because body chemistry but we needed to get it done.) Because we're not animals, we also grabbed some coffee beans to rest our poor noses between takes. We destroyed Marianne's cozy TV room in the process, just FYI.

Review: I Ordered Rothy's The Point Because I Know You're Curious.

Ah, Rothy's. Another one of those internet-only companies with a product that you kinda want even though you don't neeeeed a fancy suitcase or clear minty vitamins. Do you need expensive flats made from recycled water bottles? Probably not. But they come in cute colors! And you can wash them!

I resisted Rothy's for a VERY long time but they come in really cute colors and patterns. And I kept seeing them on people and thinking, "Oh, those are cute!" Every time I asked the wearer if they loved them and they all really, really loved them. Hell, I asked you guys too! Most of you loved them as well. So FINE. Fine. FINE. I ordered a pair. What I actually needed was a pair of black flats so I ordered red camo points because of course I did:

They arrived very quickly in a cool cardboard box that could be used for an immediate return or broken down and recycled. I appreciated that they didn't go crazy with unnecessary packaging. Right out of the box they were SO CUTE AND BRIGHT- the camo spots are actually shades of muted purple, which I love. I put them on my feet and was like, yep, these are flats. (Note: I had been encouraged to size up half a size for the points, so I did, and I think it was the right thing to do. The 8.5 fit perfectly.)

I wore them to work the next day, which was also the first time I'd worn closed-toes shoes to work in months. My heels were soft from a summer of Birkenstocks and by mid-day I'd already put those blister Band-Aids on my heels because, ouch. My heels were getting angry.

I gave my feet a day to recover and then tried again. By the third wear my Rothy's weren't bothering my heels at all and now they're really comfortable. They don't have any arch support but I'm always surprised when people are mad about that. By their design, flats are flat, y'all. You can definitely buy flat comfort shoes that have arch support but most flats are cute because they are... flat.

TLDR:

Pros - Cute as hell, still look brand new after multiple wears, dry fast if they get wet and so far they don't stink (but if they do start to smell, I can wash them!)  Also, I get compliments literally every time I wear them.

Cons- Expensive, and the insoles aren't good. I haaaaate the insoles. They're just these flimsy little removable things that slide all over the place. I bought a pair of replacement insoles from Target but haven't installed them yet.

Would I buy another pair? Uh, yeah. I mean, they have this leopard pair that I have been eyeing HARD. They also have a slip-on sneaker that is really cute. Ugh, shoes. I love you. (Note: since writing this, the red camo style has been retired. Green camo is really cute, though!)

I paid my very own money for these shoes though I did have a $20 referral code from a friend. If you're tempted, shop through my link and you'll get $20 off your first purchase! (Full disclosure: I will also get a $20 credit.)

That's my review! If you have any questions please leave a comment and I'll do my best to answer.

We Discuss: Weekly Purchases.

A: Blog Science question! Did you buy anything last week?

M: I did! I was all excited to show you my cute H&M leopard dress that I’m wearing today to lure you to love them and it’s not on the website UGH.

A: What the hell, H&M.

A: Can you take a selfie? I need to seeeee.

M: I mean it’s literally a leopard sack but it’s cute:

A: Okay, that is ADORABLE.

A: And your boots!

M: Favorite boots.

A: I would like to wear boots one day.

M: But yes it’s a VERY cute dress, I may have to dry clean it because it cannot get even one inch shorter.

M: I decided I could do booties with short sleeves/short dress and not die.

A: I am not there yet and even though I love the warm weather I’m getting impatient.

A: Have you worn your Anthro jacket yet?

M: I haven’t! It’s too damn hot! But supposedly fall is coming all at once on Thursday.

A: We are apparently getting tropical storm remnants on Thursday. Yay.

M: Oh and I got another H&M dress but I need to have the waist taken in.

A: I want to see the other dress, pls.

A: PS. I also bought something.

M: What did you get.

A: I got amazing Tencel skinny jeans from Madewell.

A: I actually found a jeans hole in my closet!

M: Hahahahahaha

A: Hear me out. I did not have a normal pair of skinny blue jeans that I could wear to work.

M: Oh I’m laughing because I bought Emergency Jeans at Anthropologie when I was in NY and they are...different.

A: Oh boy.

M: But I love them.

M: Wait you can wear jeans to work now?

A: Only on Friday or when I can sort-of disguise them as regular pants.

M: Ah

A: These:

M: Those are pretty.

A: They have special magic front pockets that just suck everything in and they run a bit large so you can size down and be all, “See? I'm still a size whateverwhatever. Everything is fine nothing to see here.”

A: Tell me about your Anthro jeans.

M: You will hate them.

M: Or at least not approve.

M: However I wore them to keynote a crafty/maker summit and they were cute and very comfy:

A: I don’t hate them! Not my style but VERY cute.

M: They were a desperation purchase in NY because I left my jeans on the drying rack at home and I wanted something different so I felt justified.

A: I'm not sure how you could have NOT bought them.

M: The leopard dress is nowhere to be found and I can’t find the other one EITHER jeez.

M: However how cute would this be with an olive jacket and sneakers??

A: Ugh, I love that.

A: 114 leopard items on H&M's website and your dress is not one of them?

M: Dude I know. I'm 99% sure this is the same dress in black (they just don't have it in leopard.)

M: The mint green dress in the second pic is the other one I bought.

A: Cute!

M: It runs huge, I bought an 8 and still need the waist taken in.

A: Dang.

M: But the fabric is very pretty.

A: I never find anything at H&M.

M: Officially giving up on finding the leopard dress.

M: It’s very hit or miss but when it’s a hit it’s so good.

M: The William Morris collaboration looks interesting, some gorgeous patterns:

A: It’s very Liberty of London meets Florence Welch!

M: Which I’m verrrry into.

A: It’s so you.

M: I just want to wear sack dresses and booties forever.

A: #truth

Outfit of the Day: RTR

As promised I wore a whole lot of my rented finery the other day and felt jaunty af right up until I walked out my door and my neighbors dog jumped on me. THESE ARE NOT MY CLOTHES, DOG. (I petted him anyway because he was cute.) Here it is:

So here I'm wearing the silk Joie top that I really love. I got the medium but could probably have worn a small. I just wanted it drape-y so I could wear it over my favorite skinny jeans. This particular print is sold out but I also love this Joie print of little champagne glasses, this floral print is gorgeous and this one too!  If it's an insect print you want, this one is pretty similar and there's this one by Frame Denim. I also think this petite option is super cute.

My wearing the Rachel Zoe Lana Twill Cigarette Pants in a size 6. They are super comfortable and I love the gold button detailing. I do not love that the side pockets stick out and make my hips look bigger but that always seems to happen. I'm not tempted to keep them though because my Everlane pants are similar enough and it's not that hard to find a black cigarette pant. They're nice, though.

*sob* I love it so muchhhhhh. This is the Veda Jayne jacket in grey, size medium. It fits snugly which looks great if I'm wearing a silk blouse but I can't get much else under it. The leather is buttery soft and the lining is cotton and quite cozy. The jacket they sent me has a broken buckle, which is my only complaint. (I can't really wear it zipped up anyway. 😬)

I love the color so much! But, if I'm going to invest in a leather jacket I will probably be boring and go with black leather. I found several grey jackets I love, like this one at Barneys and this BB Dakota version but I worry that it's trendy and will look dated in a few years. What to do? AllSaints Balfern? Madewell Ultimate? I am also going to try a few more of RTR's offerings, like this Doma moto jacket and this Slate & Willow version.

Ugh. So buttery soft. More details:

I'm wearing my Soko Paddle Pendant which Marianne gave me for my birthday. It gets a lot of compliments! Bag 'n shoes:

I just posted about my MBMJ bag last week so I'll give that a rest. My flats are Madewell sidewalk skimmers, which I recently replaced via Poshmark. I had a pair in the same color that I wore until they were sad and faded but I loved them so much I found another nearly-new pair. I wish Madewell would make them again! In the meantime, this Franco Sarto blue suede flat is pretty interesting and this pair at Anthro is super freaking cute. Also, Tory Burch is not my favorite but these flats look really nice.

That's it! I'll post another outfit with the DVF dress soon.
