Outfit Of The Day: A Tale of Two Boots.

I have so many outfits planned in my head to post and when I started writing them down I realized, wow I gots a formula. Now that formula involved leopard boots, a thing I can't believe I didn't own until very recently. If you'll remember, I bought a cute pair by Seychelles (worn here) on super sale and I really liked them. Then, the Madewell Regan pair went on crazy sale and I was like, BUT I LOVE THOSE MORE. I mean, come on:

They're both cute but the Madewell boots freaking glow. Am I wrong? It's not just the lighting, right? Anyway, I sold the Seychelles pair on Poshmark and haven't looked back. File under: The heart wants what it wants. Anyway, here's my outfit:

I'm wearing a drapey Violet & Claire top I bought years ago at TJ Maxx that has a fun jeweled neckline. It's impossible to find it online now, but this Derek Lam top has a very similar shape and this Liz Claiborne blouse has a pretty jeweled neckline.

I finished the look off with my Juliette cardigan from J.Crew. I hope a few of you were able to pick it up from the sale yesterday! I would love one in another color but I'm biding my time, for now.

My jeans are H&M from a few years back and they're my current favorite. This style at Madewell is pretty similar as far as cut, but these distressed jeans from H&M are way more fun and this patchwork pair at the Gap are pretty interesting. On to details:

Never one to leave well enough alone, I'm wearing both my silver necklaces by My Precious Studio. My friend Tere is so talented.

I'm still carrying my Longchamp Le Pliage Cuir because I need a cheerful red bag for gloomy days. The bright pink version is still on sale at NR and the bigger version of my red bag is as well.

These leopard boots, you guys. The heel is a bit higher than I usually wear but not uncomfortably so. I just love how rich the leopard pattern is and they are so well made. Boots are fun and this pair brings me joy.

This leather tote is gorgeous and is now under $70. Run.

If you haven't found your awesome leopard booties, check these out immediately.

This cute breton stripe tunic promises you that spring is coming.

THIS COAT.  It comes in a bunch of great colors but I love this dove grey.

Ain't these sparkly? That is all.

These straight leg pants would make a great jeans alternative.

My favorite Juliette cardigan is an extra 50% off in some great colors!

Throw this gorgeous necklace over any simple top or dress and you are DRESSED UP.

I know it's still winter, so here's a cute sherpa top to wear with your high-waisted jeans.

You look adorable!

Weekend Shopping Report: Knoxville Trip.

Hi hi hi! I am back from visiting Marianne in Knoxville and, no surprise, we did a little bit of shopping together. I also coveted some of her things and ended up making an online purchase while I was there which always seems to happen.

First, we made a short trip out of town to visit Greater Goods, a by-the-pound thrift store that had come highly recommended. Digging in bins of clothing is not everyone's idea of a good time but we were into it and found some great stuff! I found Marianne this cute leopard cardigan that I'm pretty sure is made out of 100% static and water bottles:

Here I am afterwards with my loot:

We also made a trip to Ulta so Marianne could stock up on a bunch of staples. I bought more of The Ordinary's Buffet and also, on her recommendation, the Real Techniques makeup sponge which is WAY cheaper than the Beauty Blender and also bigger and comes with a travel case. What? WHAT. I tried it this morning and it's great. (Also, now I feel like a sucker.)

We also hit up TJ Maxx because it's a long-standing tradition of ours. It was pretty picked over but we both ended up buying the same Tahari olive green linen t-shirt that I can't find it online anywhere but it's super great and we're both scared to wash it, because linen.

Finally, I made Marianne go to Madewell to try on skinny jeans and she bought this pair which looks AMAZING on her:

Never mind that what she needed was plain dark denim skinny jeans, the heart wants what it wants and Marianne's wanted distressed black skinny jeans.

We also spent a lot of time trying on stuff for each other and I marveled at her amazing closet and tried on a bunch of her stuff without asking. (Just kidding, I asked.) Marianne recently took advantage of the Sorel boot sale and bought some really nice, lightweight and warm boots to wear to her daughter's riding lessons, because muddy, cold riding rings are not sneaker-friendly. Her boots arrived right before I did and they're great:

They are the Sorel Explorer 1964. Super light, very warm and cute as hell. (They run half a size small, btw.) I tried on her boots because that's the kind of asshole I am and immediately decided I needed a pair for my upcoming trip to Scotland. (My Docs are great but they are HEAVY and not water-proof.) They'd sold out of most of the colors in my size but I found them on another site and ordered a pair in Quarry. Fingers crossed!

And then I drove all the way home and now it's Monday and I'm sad. Boo.

(Long) Weekend Window Shopping: Madewell Sale Dregs.

By the time you read this I'll be leaving town to go visit Marianne. Hooray! It's been too long and I can't wait to see her. So, even though it's not quite the weekend yet, I thought get a head start and point out that there are still a few really good deals to found at the Madewell sale. Get an extra 30% off sale items with code REALDEAL. (And my god, if you are a size medium, please buy this jungle cat blazer coat because it's hurting my feelings.) Here's what else I like:

We Discuss: Hunger Pangs and Overalls.

A: God, the rain. THE RAIN.

M: God save us all

A: I am real over it

M: It is truly my most hated kind of weather

M: HOW can people possibly like winter?

A: I think they have some romantic notion of winter where it’s always pretty and snowing but they don’t have to clean their car off or drive anywhere.

M: right

M: Like a hallmark movie

A: Yep

A: They forget about the endless, bleak rain

M: It’s truly relentless

M: Your drive is going to be so miserable, I’m sorry

A: Eh, what can you do

A: Might get barbecue for lunch, IDK

M: Ugh I literally read that and my stomach was like OH RIGHT

A: I am so hungry. Some jerk left a stack of McDonald’s apple pies in the break room.

M: HOSTILE WORK ENVIRONMENT!

A: THANK YOU RIGHT

A: I hissed at them like Gollum

M: Rude as hell

A: They are calling me, like greasy little sirens.

M: They are only good when hot and fresh and even then they are only okay

M: (I would crush one)

A: Agree

A: (Same)

***

A: Your Current/Elliott overalls are apparently the same pair that Frankie wears on Grace & Frankie!

A: Hers are a light wash though:

M: DAMMIT

A: I love Frankie!

M: Me toooo

A: Oh, okay. I thought you were mad

A: This just makes you want them more

M: Yes that is what’s happening

M: I’m feel like I’m slowly breaking you down on overalls. Like you’ll never wear them yourself but you’ll find yourself liking them somehow

A: I will never wear them but I'll admit they’re really cute on you

A: And also on Frankie

M: Haha thank you

M: I mean it makes sense because I feel like her aesthetic is basically mine in 20 years

M: Or mine now

A: Yes, you are definitely more Fashion though

M: I think over time I will fully embrace my inner pottery teacher

A: Are you going to buy a pair?

M: I will rent them again, stalk Poshmark, and continue my search for a cheaper pair

A: Good thought process

M: Skinny jeans 😒:

M: I like how rigid they are, the length is fine, but that’s not a skinny leg

A: Are those Everlane?

M: Yeah. No good. For me at least.

A: Bad Boyfriend

M: It is really hard to find skinny jeans that fit a big butt and skinny calves

M: I want those Target green pants in jean form

A: Madewell tencel jeans, girl

M: I am skeptical but maybe while you’re here we can try

M: It’s hard to have a size 14 ass and size 6 calves (recs welcome, y'all!)

A: Yeah, that is tough

***

M: My Madewell tiger stripe skirt from RTR:

M: Wearing today with tights but I think it’s cuter with bare legs

A: Love it! That is SO cute on you.

M: $68 on sale. I may just have to buy it.

M: I mean I just got an eBay check for the exact amount of the skirt on sale...it’s a sign right

A: eBay check?

A: But yes! It's a sign.

M: It’s still in stores, I don’t see it on posh yet

A: What is an eBay check

M: Ebates sorry

A: OH. Okay.

A: I was like, are you my mother

M: 😂

Outfit Of The Day: Never Look Back, Walk Tall, Act Fine.

If you've been reading this blog for any amount of time you know about my thing for David Bowie and you also know that I have quite a collection of Bowie tees and also a sweatshirt. (Whenever I wear that sweatshirt out in the world I get wistful, sad smiles from other women. It's lovely and a little off-putting.)

ANYWAY, I am a super fan and I'm always looking for my next t-shirt fix. When I saw this one at Anthro I was immediately all, OUTTA MY WAY LET'S DO THIS. (I get that this isn't precisely a Bowie shirt but y'all. It is totally a Bowie shirt.) Then I looked at the price tag and was like, NOPE. Fuck you, Anthro. I decided I'd wait for a sale.

Then my birthday came along with a discount and a gift card and I bought the lightning bolt tee so fast it was silly that I even thought I wouldn't. It's SO GOOD. A nice heavyweight waffle tee with an oversized fit (I'm wearing a small) and, bonus, it's keeping me from wanting this ridiculous thing. The brand is Letluv and they also make an over-priced Ramones tee that I want but I'm not sure how I feel about buying a Ramones tee from Anthro, you know? The Blondie sweatshirt is also cute, though? I am conflicted.

Here it is tucked in like a GD adult. I'm wearing my awesome tee with my very, very old Target moto jeggings because I saw Marianne wearing them the other day and was like, oh, right. I have those too. I was pretty sure they wouldn't fit but they're 90% stretch so I just went with it. I definitely would like an upgrade on these, though. I've got my eye on this pair from Athleta or maybe these jeans from Sanctuary?  On to details:

The lightning bolt is quite the star of this show so I kept things simple with my little Pyrrha Jewelry pendant. I'm also wearing my Madewell Perfect belt which is not.

My Longchamp le pliage bag has been getting a lot of use lately! I love that it's lightweight and holds a surprising amount. The nicer nylon version is available here in red and there's a different red available here in leather. My sneaker boots are Vince and they're on sale over at Off 5th! A nice change from my usual Chelsea boots. That's all I got for today but be certain you will see this shirt on the blog quite a lot in the future. Sorry/not sorry.

BUY THIS (So We Don't Have To): Anthropologie New Arrivals

I am at the point where I am ready for winter to be over. Like, really REALLY ready. This winter has been such a disappointment (all the gloom, none of the snow) and if this is it, let's just move on to spring, shall we?

Anthro of the pretty, spring clothes keeps sending me emails so I thought I'd take a look at the new offerings and see if there was anything for me. Honestly, Anthro clothing is 90% too much for my taste - there's always an extra ruffle or flounce or flower detail too many, but occasionally it's exactly right:

They named this Maeve dress after me so I am contractually obligated to love it.

I like this blouse in the pretty soft lilac more than the black version. Hmm.

Maybe it's just the way they styled this cardigan, but it's really cute, right?

These earrings are super weird and too expensive but I dig them so much.

Hot pink clog sandals! I'd wear these with a loose black dress and a big-ass necklace.

I love the delicate gold links paired with a nice hunk of dark blue lapis.

I mean, this is definitely me, right? I need this?

Metallic flats are on my wish list for spring. These would look great with cropped jeans.

Hiiiii comfy pants I would most definitely wear to work with leopard boots.

This affordable light tote comes in a bunch of colors but this metallic is BY FAR the best.

This pretty top also comes in black but I love it in white more. Who am I?

Weekend Window Shopping: My Affair With Athleta

I've been a regular shopper at Athleta for the past few years and, while I really like their fitness clothing, I love their lifestyle clothes. The pieces I own are comfortable, easy to care for, and well-designed. (They also have a great return policy.) There is a lot of great stuff on sale right now and here's what looks good to me:

Stuff I Like: Winter Edition

I don't know about you, but I am REAL TIRED of winter. It's not been a very cold winter but it's currently pouring down rain and also rained yesterday and is supposed to rain tomorrow so am just ready for this to be over. Anyway, here are the things I like that are making these dreary days a little bit better:

This Uniglo Hoodie Is Saving My Soul
See how smug that model looks? It's because she has the pile-lined hoodie from Uniqlo. I am a bad blogger because I should've reported back on this hoodie sooner and it's now under $15 and nearly sold out! It's SO SO GOOD. Thick and warm and cozy. It's like wearing a large, warm puppy. It's everything and it's keeping me from freezing to death. I recommend wearing it with the pile-lined sweatpants, a non-bra from True & Co and wrecked old t-shirt from Everlane for maximum comfort. Fashion!

This Outfit IG That Is The Distraction We Need
Okay, so I didn't ask @Everythingconverges if it was okay for me to pimp her IG on the blog, but you know what? I'm doing it anyway because she is totally Our People. Her self-described "daily fashion identity crisis" is all about excellently cute outfits with dueling descriptions that always make me laugh. Go follow her! (Also, is the title a Flannery O'Connor reference because that is THE BEST.)

This Scalp Massager Is Potentially Awesome
A few months ago I started using Hairstory New Wash Deep (also on Amazon) instead of traditional shampoo/conditioner in an effort to preserve my expensive color. My stylist recommend this product and I'm really happy with it. Then I looked it up online I was like, wait. a. minute. There's a scalp massaging brush that goes with it? The next time I got my hair done my stylist used the brush while washing my hair and it was magical. So relaxing! The Amazon link pairs the product with the brush or you can buy one by itself but I also found this version for nearly half the cost and I'm wondering if it's just as good. I might have to find out because I truly thing I'd be a better person if I had a soothing scalp massage on a regular basis.

This Product Combo That Saved My Sad Feet
One thing I hate about winter is how sad my hands and feet get - my skin is SO dry it literally cracks. WHY DO PEOPLE LOVE WINTER. It's the worst. Anyway, I got this Starskin Exfoliating Double-Layer Foot Mask in my Allure beauty box and finally decided to try it out.

I soaked my feet in disgusting squishy bags of goo for an hour, rinsed it off and forgot all about it until a week later when I started shedding all over my yoga mat during class. (MORTIFYING.) However, a few days later I had nice feet! My heels looked normal and by god, I was going to keep them that way. At my friend Kate's recommendation I bought O'Keeffe's Healthy Feet Cream and have been using it daily. It's thick, unscented and works really well. I've been using it on my sad hands too because why not. Highly recommend both products. The end.

Review: Marianne Tries Rent The Runway Unlimited.

Hey guys, it's Marianne. I’m trying Rent the Runway Unlimited, who wants reviews?

I am hoping that this will help curb my shopping, and I have to say that browsing and hearting things on the app is very fun and satisfies a lot of my shopping urges. That said, the system is not without its flaws, mostly you have no way of knowing how things will fit. I am hoping that as I get further along, I’ll get a better ideal of fit, but for this first round 3 of the four things I picked were sent back.

What I’m keeping/wearing:

This very cute Minkpink striped sweater (here on RTR). This is the exact kind of thing that’s perfect for renting, because I wouldn’t pay full price for it and I would probably only wear once or twice before being tired of it. I love the balloon sleeves and the colors.

What I would keep in a different season: the DL1961 Morgana Florence jeans (here on RTR) I'm wearing with the sweater. They fit well and are flattering, but I missed that they are crops and it’s just too cold to expose that much ankle. I wish the rise was a touch higher, so I’m going to try a different style from this brand.

What didn’t work: a MSGM sweatshirt that was literally child sized, and this Louna Teddy coat:

It wasn’t available in my size, and I was impatient and ordered a size up. It’s super cozy and cute but just too big. I tried to make it work this morning and then gave up and put it back in the bag.

I added another item because I have been tempted to buy these Universal Standard overalls (here on RTR) more than once in the past, so I was excited to see them on RTR. Welp, they are a big fat zero:

They look okay here, but I couldn’t even look at myself without the cardigan covering up the worst of it. The bib part is weirdly tiny and literally cut my boobs in half. But! I didn’t have to buy them for full price and deal with returning, and now I know they are Not For Marianne. And also I definitely want some overalls, so the hunt continues.

What did I love about my first RTR order? I love that almost everything came in a reusable garment bag. The coat shipped separately in a plastic reusable bag because it came from a different warehouse. Everything goes back in the bag and I dropped it in a UPS Dropbox on my way in to work. Within 2 days it will be back at RTR and I’ll get to select 3 new items.

I am hopeful that this is a great sustainable way to keep my closet fresh and try some new styles and designers for less money.  Want to try it out for less than the cost of a Madewell top? You can use my link to get $100 off a month of RTR unlimited--making it just $59! You can try and return as many times as you can cram into a month and then cancel if it doesn’t work for you. (Full disclosure--I get credits if you use my code, which will mean more outfit inspiration to share with you!)

Outfit Of The Day: Color? Who Needs It.

Do you ever like a new piece of clothing so much you wear it three days in a row? I have and I did:

My friend Kate gave me this leopard print Athleta sweatshirt for Christmas and it's been a really fun casual layer. It's long and slouchy so you can hike it up or pull it down over your hips however you like. I wore it to work last Friday (which is what you're looking at) and then again on Saturday and Sunday with different jeans and boots because it was working for me and also I am lazy. This sweatshirt comes in a bunch of solid colors as well and, while it's not inexpensive, I swear I always wear the hell out of my Athleta gear so it ends up being worth the money. Also, they have good sales! This funnel neck sweatshirt is on sale and looks so cozy-but-chic.

I'm wearing my sweatshirt with my new Madewell Perfect Vintage jeans. They look black on the website but are really dark grey, so I am just wearing a lot of grey, which feels right. My hair and lipstick is my pop of color, right? These jeans are definitely becoming a favorite - they're my attempt to branch out from skinny jeans. Madewell has a lot of good options if you're also trying to branch out. I love this pair of of the Demi-Boot that's on sale.

Here I am stealing Marianne's pose. If you're mad at me for making you want an over-priced leopard sweatshirt, here's a very similar one at Old Navy or check out this Betsey Johnson sweatshirt that's super cute and on sale. On to details:

The usual Dean Davidson labradorite tassel. I love wearing labradorite with grey because it seems to bring out the fire in the stones. This is another DD tassel necklace which I adore and here's another labradorite necklace I love but can't have right now.

My favorite Miu Miu bag, of course, and my Vince Newlyn sneaker boot things that I forgot I had. Oops. I have been wearing them a lot since I found them in my closet. Look at me! Shopping in my closet or something.
