Mascary Help.

Oh, you guys. Help. I recently bought a tube of my old faithful mascara, Maybelline The Colossal:

Maybelline The Colossal

But, no. Something is... different. The brush is a bit different and it's really clumpy and WOE. I don't understand. Did I just get a dud or did they change it? I am sad. I dealt with my sadness by buying this one:

Maybelline The Falsies

I thought maybe I should try a waterproof formula because my mascara always disappears by the end of the day. Nope. I do like the brush but it leaves flakes under my eyes and is impossible to remove.

I am pretty adamant about not spending big bucks on mascara, though I have been enjoying a deluxe sample of Buxom Lash more than I'd like to admit. Please save me from spending $19 on mascara and give me your best drugstore recommendation. I have thin, straight lashes, so I definitely need help with volume. I don't generally bother with lengthening formulas because the little fiber bits don't play nice with contact lenses.

Whatcha got?

Oh! And while I have you I need an opinion. I need new sneakers for the gym and I usually get the plainest version of Nike Frees I can find but YOU GUYS:

Nike Free 5.0 V4

Nike Free TR Connect 2

Which one? Or neither? But come on. This is going to happen. Which one?

  1. Definitely the top/darker ones- they are great!
What about that butterfly mascara Marianne liked (Loreal?)? I think it came in a silver tube?

  2. I like L'Oreal's version of the tube-creating mascara. It has a while primer (for thickening) on one end, and a tube-creating mascara on the other. The whole thing slips off with warm water in the shower, no eye-makeup remover required, but it does not flake or wear off under my eyes at all during the day. I discovered this when I wore contacts (lasik surgery 15 years ago), but I still love it. Clinique also has a tube-creating mascara that has no primer, doesn't thicken as nicely, and is twice as expensive.

  3. I'm a CoverGirl LashBlast Volume lover for sure. It's the one in the orange tube. I alternate between the waterproof and regular, and neither flakes.
Also, have you seen this ("the patron saint of mascara" - ha!)? http://www.xojane.com/beauty/best-drugstore-mascaras

  4. I noticed the difference in the mascara too, but I have no idea what it is....

And on the Frees. Yes, please! I would love to have either pair, but i think I'm digging the leopard just a little more.

BTW - because you always rave about your Marc Jacobs bags, I finally took the plunge and bought one (granted I got it from eBay). It's the Venetia satchel in dark teal and it's GORGEOUS!! I'm really loving it.

    1. THANK YOU. I thought I was going insane. It is different, right?

And yay for your new MJ bag! The Venetia is a good one, iconic.

    2. Thanks! I tried the L'Oreal tube-creating mascara mentioned above. I'm actually kinda digging it. Today is only day two, so we'll see how my allergies react with it, but so far so good and my lashes look loooong without being clumpy.

  5. I used to be a L'Oreal Voluminous (original flavour) girl, but I've switched to the Butterfly version. I'm a big fan. It gives volume + definition. I wear the regular, not waterproof.Good stuff.

  6. I'm obsessed with the Physicians Formula mascaras. My skin and eyes are super sensitive, and I especially love the brush on this one: http://www.physiciansformula.com/en-us/productdetail/eyes/mascara/01063.html . It doesn't flake and I'm not putting chemicals in/on/around my eyes.

  7. I swear by all the mascaras from Essence. Don't know if it's carried at all drugstores, but it's available at Ulta. They're all priced under $4, and as a owner and wearer of over 30 fancy high-end and drugstore brands (yeah, I spend my money wisely), they kick the ass of every other mascara out there. This one is my favorite: http://www.ulta.com/ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod6380191.
It's a big, full brush that gives tons of volume, but it lengthens nicely too. It's like my super-secret, super-cheap weapon.

  8. Maybelline Full 'n Soft. I've been using it for over a decade. It's build-able, it doesn't flake, and it thickens up my pathetically teeny tiny eyelashes without making me look like Tammy Faye.

I can't buy it in Germany, so every time I have to fly back from the US I strap tubes to my body a la Midnight Express.

  9. Seconding Maybelline's Full 'n Soft. I've also been devoted to it for over a decade. It actually lives up to it's name.

  10. I have a notoriously difficult time with mascara- I used to like that Colossal too, ages ago. But years ago I I found my be-all-and-end-all. After 5 happy faithful years, Shiseido of course discontinued (it was Lasting Lift and I bought the last 9 I could get my hands on.)
I'm down to 4 now so I keep trying mascaras so that I have something when the LL run out. I was hoping that I'd have better luck here in Japan, as they are known for good mascaras and because my beloved Shiseido is Japanese. I tried a few Fibrewigs, some other "cult" ones; Heroine, Majolica Majorca; no go.
    And then I found.....
Shiseido Integrate Gracy Mascara!! (Shiseido has a bunch of little shoot-offs under its umbrella here, one of them is Integrate. Majolica Majorca is another. Etc) It's gorgeous, and simple- easy to apply and remove..(no fibres, but it's waterproof) and it gives you these strikingly pretty black lashes! Nice volume, length- it's a perfect little mascara, IMO. I even chose it over my Shiseido LL quite a bit because it's easier to get on and off and so pretty. Less dramatic than LL, but it can be layered for more drama.
And because I wouldn't do this to you unless you could get your hands on it, here's the amazon link :)

The tube is small, but I happen to love it because it holds almost as much anyway, and it fits in every pouch and case and carrier. ( I've been using mine daily for 2 months and it's not running out) It's about $10 here, so it's not even that much more with shipping over thar :) I'd be curious to know what you think if you try it.

Oh, and I'd say...the first pair of Frees, the darker ones. They look a little more unique than pair #2, yet still quirky yet still versatile. They are both really cute though. Hmm. Yeah, tough, I looked at them again and changed my mind. :) lol- good luck choosing!

  11. I'll put a 3rd vote in for Maybelline's Full N Soft.

  12. I like the L'Oreal Beauty Tubes, myself, because it's easy to reove and yet doesn't come off untill you take it off.

I have the leopard print Frees so I think you should get the reptile. Super fun, either way.

  13. Maybelline Volum' Express The Rocket Mascara

    https://well.ca/products/maybelline-volum-express-the-rocket_84350.html

The best. I have short AND thin lashes. This is better on the volume than length but it doesn't flake and it's still there at the end of my day.

  14. The most insane volume I've ever got from a drugstore mascara was Jordana Best Lash Extreme Volumizing. It's really impressive. No problems with flaking or smearing or anything for me. Usually I go for Covergirl LashBlast, though, because it looks good on me without being excessively dramatic for everyday.

  15. I have nothing helpful to add but thought you might enjoy knowing that here in Australia, Maybelline (or Covergirl, Rimmel etc) mascara is around $15-20; while Loreal/Revlon/Max Factor is more like $22-30. For the fancy/fancier stuff (Benefit, MAC, Lancome etc) you are looking at around $50. FOR A TUBE OF MASCARA. So $19 for a mascara sounds totally reasonable to me!!

Re. the shoes, my immediate instinct was the snakeskin print, but on further viewing the leopard is also winning me around. Sooooo...get both? You're welcome.

    1. That is an OUTRAGE. It would be cheaper just to have a friend in the US mail you mascara.

  17. By no means helpful. . .and late, but I liked the Buxom sample so much I bought the dang full sized one. And guess what? I think I liked it better when it was free. Doesn't seem worth the money I shelled out.

  18. Actually, that is really helpful! I prefer to stick with drugstore brands for mascara.
