Adrien: Questionable.

I don't know, you guys. I wore some clothes and I'm not sure any of it is really working, especially the bright red Anthropologie cords. I like them in theory but I'm not sure I nailed it. Anyway, behold:

Is it the boots throwing this off? Those are my beloved Frye Veronica boots but I think maybe my brown Fryes would've worked better. My sweater is a J.Crew Tippi sweater and my only real complaint is that it's tough to find the right t-shirt to wear under it, which is why I was delighted to find the perfect 3/4 sleeve James Perse tee at Marshalls marked way, way down. Yes! EXCEPT, the retail price was $125. I will just let that sink in while you get a peek at a $125 t-shirt:

ARE YOU KIDDING ME. It's just a little striped t-shirt! $125! I like James Perse but that just seems beyond ridiculous. Nothing about this tee is worth that kind of money. Ahem. I am also wearing a little bit of leopard in belt form

My bag is a MBMJ Baby Groovee and it seems to go with nothing and everything at the same time. I've been enjoying it despite it's smallness. Such nice leather.

My fringe necklace is J.Crew and it still pleases me despite shedding stones like crazy. If you're in the market for a long fringe necklace, I think this one would be a great option. Or this!

That's the outfit! Not my best effort but at this time a year I'm lucky if I manage to leave the house fully clothed.

  1. I like the cords and the jumper. I think they look great together. But something's wrong when the boots are added to the combination… Maybe ankle boots with medium heel would work better.

    1. I thought about that but the cords are TIGHT and not really work appropriate with ankle boots. Tall boots balance it out a bit more but maybe *different* boots.

    2. Pointed toe ballet flats? Yeah, but they are not exactly appropriate for biting winter cold ;) Although I wish they were (sigh).

  2. I was going to suggest a white or cream top, but I realized that could potentially veer into Santa territory. All of the individual pieces are great, I just can't quite put my finger on what's off.

  3. Yeah, I second the ballet flat even though they aren't season appropriate.

  4. I will chime in with sisterly love!
First you look fab, but I think the problem is the sweater and pants both being so fitted are the problem...oversize the top and you are good to go (imho)

  5. I think the problem is that the colors are too disparate. The red is too warm and deep for that sweater (a light, cool grey). If you wore the red pants with a dark brown sweater and brown boots, it would look much more cohesive (all of the parts of the outfit would be warm, rich colors). If you wanted to keep the black boots, you could just switch to a black sweater, and then all the colors would be dark, and the look would be much more harmonious.

  6. I think you look great, but agree with a commenter above that it might be the proportions that are off- I'd try a longer top, or something with a looser, boxy fit.

  7. I love the pants and boots! I think the sweater's color works as well ... it just needs to be a bit longer and a bit less fitted. Great - now I want a pair of red cords, you shopping enabler you!

  8. I agree with all who say it's the proportion, not the colour. Not that you don't have the figure for it, but it looks a bit 2002 to have all parts of the outfit so snug.

    1. Not that I remember what anyone was wearing in 2002 - plucking a year from the air.

  9. Cognac ankle boots? A shoe bootie? I Had a similar pair and could never figure what went best either.. But I think cognac as a footwear colour might blend best. And a blazer. That is one pricey tee!

  10. I have a very similar problem with bold pieces. I have a pair of tomato red cords that I ADORE but yes, they are hard to style. I agree that you need a boxier, swingier top, and that the boots or at least the boots with the bag aren't quite working. I suggest a striped top, actually - either black and white or grey and white, and then you can keep the black boots but do a black or grey bag, Or a bag that is a totally different pop of color like turquoise. But the brown is competing with the red and the black, IMO. I have had a lot of success this year with b/w stripes paired with a bright color - it's a nod to all the heinous 80s/90s stuff in the stores right now (NO NO NO LIVED IT ONCE BUT NEVER AGAIN) but age appropriate and not too trendy.

  11. I agree with you that the boots are what's throwing it off...I just don't think any tall boots will work well with those pants. Don't get me wrong, they are both adorable pieces on their own but together it creates two big blocks of color on your legs which messes up the proportions and makes your legs look a bit stumpy. I think this is especially true for black boots. I only wear them with dark pants, otherwise you have this really "heavy" block of color on the bottom kinda weighing down the outfit. I think with an ankle boot, heel or flat this would be adorable!

  12. I think this outfit works well, especially the grey top with the bright red pants and black boots. Personally I'd have gone for a white t-shirt myself but yours is fine.
