Review: Everlane Slim Silk and Silk Round Collar Shirts.

OH MY GOD YOU GUYS HELP ME. I recently ordered two different Everlane silk blouses and I have no idea what to do. Keep both? Return both? Keep one? I was initially unimpressed when I tried them on right out of the packaging (so wrinkly!) but now that they're all pressed and pretty I'm having a hard time deciding.

First impression: Everlane silk is really nice quality, especially for the price. Weighty with a nice sheen. The fit and colors are where my hesitation lies. I ordered the Slim Silk Shirt in black and the Silk Round Collar in light grey. First the Slim Silk Shirt:

I got the Slim Silk in my usual size 6 and it fits nicely through the shoulders and the sleeves hit exactly where they should, but it does catch slightly on my hips. It's also a bit shorter, which I'm not sure is quite so flattering on me. The black silk is actually a washed greyish-black which I like a lot, but if you were expecting black-black this isn't it. Here's a closer look:

Here's a side view:

It doesn't quite skim over my hips like I'd like, but I'm not sure going up a size would fix this. I do like that it fits nicely through my narrow shoulders which almost never happens.

I bought the Round Collar in a medium because I liked the light grey color and they were sold out of the small. It's an older style (from before they moved to number sizing) so probably won't be restocked. It's definitely an oversized fit and the sleeves are a bit long, but they look pretty cute rolled up, so that doesn't bother me. And I adore the cute round collar. But, does it look too big?

The color is a very light warm grey and I like it, but I'm not sure it's super flattering on me. (Definitely different than anything I own.) I do love the length and how it skims over my hips:

Ugh, what do I do? I can keep both, return both, get the round collar in a small (but only in black) or get the slim in a size up? Or I can try a different style altogether and see if that works? I do like the blue colorway in the relaxed fit, but ugh. I hate having to return and return and return.

  1. The black one is better on you - maybe try the size up? The taupe one looks too big.

  2. Ha, denim and silk, my favorite uniform! I also have narrow shoulders, in fact I have a very similar body type to you. I tend to NOT perfectly fit my shoulders, preferring a slightly slouched look. Fitted shoulders seem to accentuate the narrowness in my eye so I'd personally size up in the slim in black. You do look great in both, love your blog which is new to me.

On an aside when pairing denim with silk I always roll up the sleeves. I just love the drape and the modern, casual look:)

    1. Thanks! That helps. I don't mind the oversized slouch, there's just a fine line between slouchy and too-damn-big. Thanks for reading! :)

  3. I like the grey one better from the farther shot but up close, I think the grey looks too big. You might try that cut in a smaller size (although then you would have two black shirts, but you could see which fit you liked better and return the other, but like you said, such a pain to keep returning!)

  4. If it were me, I'd return them both. I just don't think either is super flattering and there are so many other silk shirts out there that you can find one that actually fits.

  5. Hi. I think the black one is too snug around the hips and that is causing the shirt to poof at the tummy area (first picture). It's nice everywhere else so maybe a tailor can create some side slits at the bottom for more room? The grey one drapes beautifully. It looks a bit large on you but I think it's because of the sleeves so that can likely be solved by shortening them or rolling them up. However! I agree with you that the colour isn't very flattering.

  6. If it were me, I'd return both. Not a fan of button down shirts to begin with. Black is better looking than the grey which is too big.

  7. My vote goes to "return both". Neither is a Cinderella fit.

The blue one looks nice on the model, but also longer than the black one looks on you. Are they fibbing about her being 5 foot 10, or perhaps you are 6 foot 4? If the blue will be the same length on you, maybe try it in the next size up. I think that color will be more interesting on you and wear better than either of these.

    Happy silk hunting!

    1. Hey Ally! The blue one is a totally different cut (relaxed instead of slim) so that's why it's longer.

  8. Agree that the grey is too big but the color is lovely and different. The black is too short. Size up in the black? Down in the grey? Ugggghh tricky.

  9. I agree the light grey is too big, but I like the black. But if you're not in love with either of them, send them back.

  11. The grey one is too large, and I don't care for the color on you. But I'm not crazy about the fit of the black one either. And I don't think sizing up is the answer. But here's the thing, I don't like them on the models on the website either, and I assume you did otherwise you probably wouldn't have ordered them. So you probably shouldn't listen to me.

  12. I like the black, but perhaps it isn't perfect. Have you tried Cuyana? I'd love to see you do a review of their silk tops or clothes in general. I just ordered the silk tee. I read several online reviews that the quality is better than Everlane, who I'm a huge fan of, but I don't typically wear silk, and I've not tried Everlane's silk, so I don't know...

  13. Return the black one. Doesn't fit right.

I like the white one! I wouldn't exchange for a different size. The only reason the white one looked big was because of the sleeves, but if you roll them up you'll be good!

However....I'm one that if I have to ask friend, or I'm hesitating, It probably means I don't love it. And if I only try to buy items that I absolutely love! If you're not crazy about them now you won't be crazy about wearing them. And just think- you can use that money instead to buy other fun things!
