Beauty Updates: I Know Nothing. (Also, I Am Cranky.)

Probably you think I know something about beauty and skincare since I've been writing about it on a blog for nine damn years. It's all a lie. I don't know anything! I am you. You are me. We get a 15% off VIB coupon from Sephora and suddenly we're scrolling through 800 different moisturizers trying to figure out which one will change our lives. Because surely one of them will, right? I just need THE RIGHT ONE.

What is it about a Sephora code that unhinges me? It's only 15% off! It's not even that good. And yet, I do need moisturizer (and probably some other stuff really) so why not figure all that out right now? Cool? Cool. Now, I had been using Kiehl's Ultra Facial Cream and it's fine, despite the tub packaging which I don't love. When I ran out of it I bought a tube of The Ordinary's moisturizer and it's just...okay. It's not offensive but nothing about it is awesome either. What I really want is this:

Ooooh. I know. But if we're being honest, I want it because it's beautiful. It's a beautiful TUB of fancy cream. There's that tub again. Let's be practical. Maybe this one:

It's inexpensive, it's not in a tub, it seems popular. But, nothing about it feels life-change-y. I apparently expect a lot from moisturizer. And ooh, Sunday Riley has a face cream version of the CEO stuff I like:

I KNOW IT'S IN A TUB. I give up, okay? It's fine. I don't even care anymore. I hate Paula Begoun and her scammy site anyway. And listen, as always, I am open to your suggestions. Now, what about fun stuff? I would love a new lipstick - all of mine are so decrepit that Marianne is somewhere frowning right now and doesn't even know why. She can just sense it. Shhh. So, I love this gloss which means maybe I'd love this lipstick:

Isn't it fun and ridiculous? Or maybe something like this lipstick from Charlotte Tilbury?

I historically have a hard time with matte lipcolor but I am intrigued by this Pat McGrath set:

Finally, this is not lipstick but have you smelled any of the Tom Ford fragrances? They are AMAZING. I love this one quite a lot:

I also love the Jasmin Rouge but it only comes in Expensive and Crazy Expensive. Such is the way. Did you get a VIB coupon? What are you buying?

  1. I got one. I will probably buy this https://www.sephora.com/product/polished-rice-enzyme-powder-P426340 because I love it a lot

  2. I really want the Drunk Elephant Lala moisturizer. Sali Hughes said she loved it for her very dry skin. I wish it came in a smaller size because I get so bored with skincare.

  3. I'm probably going to get a new perfume rollerball of something, a mascara, and the Ma'Damn matte lipstick from Fenty.

It's hot as hell right now, so this is some info to tuck away, but that CEO moisturizer + Kiehl's Midnight Recovery Concentrate is THE BEST combo I've found for sad winter skin. I really love SR's Tidal (also in a goddamn tub) for a lighter moisturizer, but tbh, I've just been going with the Cerave daily moisturizer + my Supergoop Superscreen and it's getting it done. At this point in the year, I've basically lost my will to do anything. (It's so hot.) (Also, I'll never not notice that the moisturizers are in tubs, germing up all the moisture! So dumb.)

    1. I KNOW RIGHT. The tub thing is so annoying. I will say, I loved Tidal too until I realized it made my face crazy sun-sensitive. I think it's what caused some of my terrible reactions a few years ago. But the CEO moisturizer + Kiehl's oil sounds intriguing. I'll definitely tuck that away.

  4. I’m splurging on All. The. Olaplex. Fingers crossed it lives up to the hype. And Anastasia brow pomade for my 14 year old daughter, because she pays attention to things like sculpted brows and I do not.

  5. Tatcha skincare is freaking amazing. I already re-ordered the skin essence during the sale, which seems like it should just be water in a bottle, but makes my skin glow. Also bought the new eye cream, because considering how much I've loved everything else I've tried, it should be magic.

  6. That first aid beauty moisturizer is legit. Not fancy but does great things. It me, as the kids say...

  7. I love that damn Tom Ford perfume but it does. not. last. For the price it should outlast a nuclear war. Anyway I got a rouge coupon so since it’s 20% off I have to use it or I lose money, right? Math. I am buying some Caudalie stuff because I looooooove it, maybe some glam glow face masks (oh I have a tatcha mask and it does NOTHING if that helps your research), and probably some face mist because apparently I do face misting now, and of course some more berry red lipstick to add to the pile of berry red lipstick I already have and don’t ever wear. Oh, and overpriced shampoo.

  8. Also I have some Fenty lipstick and it’s fine, it doesn’t light my pants on fire. But I don’t like her gloss so maybe I’m broken.

  9. I'm on my second bottle of Purity Made Simple, which was sent to me in a Play box, and while I kind of dislike most Philosophy products this is an ideal moisturizer for my dry to normal skin. Lightweight, smells good, and no tub. Also, only $25.

Also, going to buy a crazy hair mask, and Moroccan Oil, because they are products I can't quit.

  10. It doesn't have that exotic product vibe, but the Clinique Moisture Surge range has done wonders for my skin. The different types of cream within the range are genuinely different, too -- I use the most intensely moisturizing one in the winter and a lighter formulation in the summer, for instance.
